Insect Pest Identification and Organic Control

Sucking Insects

These pests pierce plant tissue and extract sap — causing wilting, yellowing, and virus transmission.

Aphids

Appearance: Small (1–3mm), soft-bodied, green/black/brown; clusters on new growth and undersides of leaves Damage: Curled leaves; stunted growth; sticky honeydew → black sooty mold Season: Cool seasons, shaded conditions

Organic controls (in order of preference):

  1. Water jet spray (strong stream from hose) — disrupts colonies
  2. Ladybird beetles (natural predators) — attract by not using pesticides
  3. Neemastra spray (5%)
  4. Neem oil 0.5% + soap (2g castile soap/L as spreader)
  5. Agniastra 3%

Whiteflies

Appearance: Tiny white-winged insects; adult flies off when plant disturbed; nymphs are scale-like on leaf undersides Damage: Sucks phloem sap; transmits viruses (especially in tomato, chili, cotton) Key crops: Tomato, chili, cucumber, cotton, brinjal

Organic controls:

  1. Yellow sticky traps (1 per 10 m²) — most effective non-spray
  2. Beauveria bassiana spray 2g/L (entomopathogenic fungus)
  3. Neem oil 0.5% foliar spray
  4. Reflective silver mulch on soil surface — confuses whiteflies
  5. Encarsia formosa (parasitic wasp) — commercial release

Thrips

Appearance: Very tiny (1–2mm), yellow/brown; move rapidly; hard to see Damage: Silvery streak marks on leaves; flower/fruit damage; deformed fruits; virus transmission (TSWV in chili) Key crops: Chili, onion, cotton, cucumber

Organic controls:

  1. Blue sticky traps (thrips prefer blue > yellow)
  2. Beauveria bassiana + Metarhizium mixed spray
  3. Neem oil 0.5%
  4. Spinosad 0.4 mL/L (NPOP permitted; strongest organic option)
  5. Reflective mulch

Mealybugs

Appearance: White cottony masses on stems, leaf axils, roots Damage: Sucking sap; producing honeydew; weakening plants Key crops: Sugarcane, papaya, grapes, coffee, cotton

Organic controls:

  1. Neem oil + soap spray (persistent coverage needed)
  2. Cryptolaemus montrouzieri (mealybug destroyer beetle) — commercial release
  3. Agniastra spray
  4. Beauveria bassiana
  5. Manually remove cottony masses and destroy

Caterpillars and Moths

Lepidopteran larvae are the most damaging chewing insect group.

Bollworm / Pod Borer (Helicoverpa armigera)

The most economically damaging pest in India. Affects cotton (boll damage), chickpea (pod damage), tomato (fruit boring), sorghum (head damage).

Organic controls:

  1. Bt spray (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki) — 2 mL/L, apply at egg hatch stage, repeat every 5–7 days. Most effective specific control.
  2. NPV (Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus) — species-specific virus, highly effective; mix with Bt for synergy
  3. Pheromone traps — Delta traps with Helicoverpa lure (monitoring + mass trapping)
  4. Trichogramma egg parasitoid release — 1 lakh/acre/week during egg-laying period
  5. Neem oil at petal fall stage

Cutworms

Damage: Cut seedlings at soil level overnight — classic "soldier ant attack" look Control:

  • Pitfall traps (tin cans around affected area)
  • Bacillus thuringiensis (soil drench)
  • Wood ash ring around plant bases

Leaf Miners

Damage: Silvery trails on leaves — larvae tunnel inside leaf Control: Neem oil 0.5% + Beauveria

Borers

Stem Borer (Rice, Sugarcane, Maize)

Appearance: Entry holes in stem; sawdust-like frass Damage: Dead heart (vegetative stage); white ear (reproductive stage); huge yield loss

Organic controls:

  1. Trichogramma chilonis release (1 lakh eggs/acre/week — attacks borer eggs before hatching)
  2. Beauveria bassiana 2g/L spray at whorl stage
  3. Bt spray at egg hatching
  4. Light traps to kill adult moths
  5. Pull and destroy affected tillers immediately

Shoot Fly (Sorghum, Maize)

Damage: Dead heart in seedlings; "onion leaf" symptom Control: Seed treatment with Beauveria + Trichoderma; early planting to escape peak period; resistant varieties

Soil Pests

Termites

Damage: Attack crop roots, base of stem; serious in dry soils Control:

  • Neem cake 200 kg/ha in soil at planting
  • Beauveria bassiana 2 kg/ha soil drench
  • Keep soil moist (termites prefer dry soil)

Root Grubs (Holotrichia spp.)

Damage: Larvae attack roots; wilting and death of plants Control:

  • Beauveria bassiana 2–4 kg/ha soil application at planting
  • Metarhizium anisopliae soil drench
  • Light traps for adult beetles during monsoon emergence
