Organic Wheat Cultivation: Stage-by-Stage Rabi Protocol
Complete organic wheat growing guide โ seed treatment, sowing timing, basal dressing, foliar schedule, and yellow rust management for North India's primary Rabi crop.
Organic Wheat Cultivation
Basics
Season: Rabi (NovemberโApril) Soil: Loam, pH 6.0โ7.5
Stage-by-Stage Organic Protocol
| Stage | Action |
|---|---|
| Pre-sowing | 5 t/ha FYM incorporated; soil test conducted |
| Seed Treatment | Trichoderma + PSB + Azotobacter seed coating |
| Sowing | Late October to early November โ precise timing is critical for yield |
| Basal | Mustard cake (500 kg/ha) + neem cake (200 kg/ha) |
| CRI Stage (21 DAS) | Jeevamrutham 200 L/acre drench (Crown Root Initiation โ critical irrigation/nutrient stage) |
| Tillering | Panchagavya foliar spray, 3% dilution |
| Flowering | Wood ash solution (1%) + seaweed extract foliar |
| Yellow Rust Control | 1% garlic spray + Pseudomonas application |
Why Sowing Timing Matters So Much
Wheat is highly sensitive to sowing date. Late October to early November sowing in North India aligns the crop's critical growth stages (tillering, flowering, grain filling) with optimal temperature windows. Delayed sowing beyond mid-November can reduce yield by 1โ1.5% per day of delay due to terminal heat stress during grain filling in March.
CRI Stage โ Why It's Critical
The Crown Root Initiation stage (around 21 days after sowing) is when wheat develops its permanent root system. A Jeevamrutham drench at this exact stage maximizes the establishment of beneficial root-zone microbes right as the permanent root architecture forms โ this timing significantly outperforms earlier or later application.
Yellow Rust โ The Major Organic Challenge
Yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis) is wheat's most damaging fungal disease in North India, especially in cooler, humid conditions. Organic management relies on:
- Preventive Pseudomonas fluorescens spray before disease onset
- Garlic extract spray (1%) โ mild but consistent antifungal effect
- Resistant variety selection is the single most effective tool โ choose locally recommended rust-resistant varieties from your state agriculture department
