Worm Castings and Worm Tea: The Highest Quality Organic Fertilizer
Why vermicompost outperforms all other organic fertilizers โ NPK content, microbial benefits, worm tea preparation, and application rates.
Worm Castings and Worm Tea
Worm castings (vermicompost) are the highest quality organic fertilizer known to science. They outperform regular compost in NPK content, microbial diversity, plant growth hormones, and enzyme activity โ in every metric.
Why Worm Castings Are Superior
Earthworm digestion does not just decompose organic matter โ it transforms it through enzymatic processes in the worm gut:
| Property | Regular Compost | Worm Castings |
|---|---|---|
| Available Nitrogen | 1โ1.5% | 1.5โ2.5% |
| Available Phosphorus | 0.3โ0.5% | 0.8โ1.5% |
| Available Potassium | 0.5โ1% | 0.5โ1.5% |
| CEC | 50โ100 cmol/kg | 100โ200 cmol/kg |
| Microbial activity | High | Very High |
| Plant growth hormones | Low | IAA, Cytokinins present |
| Pathogen suppression | Moderate | Strong (worm gut enzymes) |
Additionally, castings release nutrients slowly and steadily โ they don't cause nutrient burn and the available nutrient window lasts 3โ6 months.
NPK of Worm Castings
- Nitrogen (N): 1โ2%
- Phosphorus (P): 0.8โ1.5%
- Potassium (K): 0.5โ1.5%
- Plus: Calcium, Magnesium, trace elements
- Plus: Beneficial bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes
Application Rates
| Crop Type | Rate | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Vegetables | 1โ2 t/ha | Broadcast + incorporate |
| Transplants | 100โ200 g per planting hole | In-hole at transplanting |
| Orchards/trees | 2โ5 kg per tree | Surface ring + water in |
| Seedling mix | 20โ30% by volume | Mix into seedling medium |
| All field crops | 500 kg โ 2 t/ha | Pre-planting broadcast |
Even small amounts make a significant difference. Worm castings are so biologically active that 10% inclusion in seedling media produces measurable yield improvement.
Worm Tea
Worm tea is made by steeping castings in water โ extracting and multiplying the biological activity:
Simple method:
- Place 1 kg castings in cloth bag
- Steep in 20 L water for 24 hours (stir occasionally)
- Remove bag, apply liquid immediately
With aeration (AACT method):
- Add molasses, aerate 24 hours โ multiplies bacteria 100x
- Much more potent than simple steep
Application rate: 10โ20 L per ha as foliar or soil spray.
Making Vermicompost โ Quick Overview
Key parameters:
- Container: Concrete bed 1m ร 2m ร 0.5m (or windrow)
- Worm species: Eisenia fetida (Red wigglers) or Perionyx excavatus (Indian Blue)
- Bedding: Pre-composted cow dung + coir pith (50:50)
- Feed: 5โ10 cm layer every 7โ10 days
- Moisture: 60โ70% (wrung sponge test)
- Temperature: 15โ30ยฐC (shade essential in summer)
- Cycle time: 45โ60 days per batch
Economics:
- Setup cost: โน15,000โ25,000 for 1 tonne/month capacity
- Inputs: Near zero (cow dung, kitchen waste)
- Output value: โน8โ15/kg castings = โน8,000โ15,000/month
- Worm biomass doubles every 60 days โ worms sell at โน500โ1,000/kg
