Neemastra: Neem-Based Broad-Spectrum Organic Pesticide
Make Neemastra from fresh neem leaves โ the broad-spectrum organic pest and disease control spray that works against virtually all sucking insects and mild fungal infections.
Neemastra
Neemastra is a simpler, gentler alternative to Agniastra โ using neem's natural azadirachtin as the primary active compound. It is one of the most broadly applicable organic pest controls available to Indian farmers, since neem trees grow across the country.
Ingredients
| Ingredient | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Neem leaves (fresh) | 5 kg |
| Cow urine | 5 L |
| Cow dung | 1 kg |
| Water | 100 L |
Preparation
- Crush or chop neem leaves to release compounds
- Soak crushed leaves in cow urine + water for 24โ48 hours
- Strain through cloth, removing leaf material
- Add cow dung dissolved in small amount of water
- Filter the combined liquid well
- Ready to use
Shelf life: 3 months in sealed container, stored in shade.
Active Compounds
Azadirachtin: The primary active compound in neem. Acts as an insect growth regulator (IGR) โ disrupts molting, pupation, feeding behavior, and reproduction. Does NOT kill insects immediately (contact effect is mild); instead prevents them from completing their life cycle.
Nimbin: Antifungal compound โ mild effectiveness against powdery mildew, early stages of fungal infection.
Salannin: Feeding deterrent โ makes leaves unpalatable to insects.
Application
Dilution: 5โ10% (50โ100 mL per 1 L water)
Apply as fine mist spray:
- Both upper and lower leaf surfaces
- Soil drench for soil-dwelling larvae
- Early morning or evening
Frequency:
- Preventive (no visible pest): Every 14โ21 days
- Active infestation: Every 5โ7 days for 3 applications, then maintain
Target Pests and Diseases
Insects: Virtually all sucking insects โ aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies, leafhoppers, thrips, scale insects. Also effective against caterpillar eggs and young instars.
Diseases (mild effect): Early powdery mildew, some fungal leaf spots.
Not effective against: Hard-bodied beetles, stem borers (inside stem), advanced fungal infections.
Neemastra vs. Commercial Neem Products
| Product | Active % | Cost | Shelf Life |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neemastra (homemade) | Variable (fresh leaf) | Near zero | 3 months |
| Neem oil (commercial) | 1โ3% Azadirachtin | โน200โ400/L | 2 years |
| NSKE (Neem Seed Kernel Extract) | 5% Azadirachtin | Low (DIY) | 1 month |
For farmers with neem trees, Neemastra is the most economical option. For those without, commercial neem oil concentrate (diluted to 0.3โ0.5%) is a reliable alternative.
NSKE (Neem Seed Kernel Extract) โ Even More Potent
NSKE concentrates the azadirachtin from seeds (highest concentration):
- Dry neem seeds, remove shells
- Crush kernels, soak 12 hours in water (2 kg kernel : 10 L water)
- Filter and spray at 5% concentration
Higher azadirachtin content than leaf-based Neemastra. More potent but more labor.
