Cow Urine (Gomutra): Nitrogen Boost, Natural Pesticide, and Soil Activator
How to collect, ferment, and apply cow urine โ what it contains, dilution rates for foliar and soil use, and the science behind its antimicrobial properties.
Cow Urine (Gomutra) in Organic Farming
Cow urine is a byproduct of every cattle farm and one of the most underutilized organic inputs in India. It serves triple duty: nitrogen source, natural pesticide, and soil microbial activator.
What Cow Urine Contains
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Urea | Quick nitrogen source |
| Creatinine | Nitrogen compound |
| Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium | Secondary/micronutrients |
| Natural enzymes and hormones | Growth stimulation |
| Antimicrobial compounds (uric acid, ammonia at concentration) | Repels and suppresses insects and some pathogens |
Simple Fermentation
Basic method:
- Collect fresh cow urine in a clay pot or plastic drum
- Store in shade for 7โ15 days โ ferments naturally
- Dilute 10:1 with water before soil application
- Dilute 20:1 before foliar spray
Amritpani (enhanced version):
- 1 L cow urine + 1 L water + 1 tbsp jaggery + 1 tbsp honey
- Ferment 7 days
- Dilute 10:1 before use
Application Rates
| Method | Dilution | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Soil drench | 10:1 (1L urine : 10L water) | N boost + microbial activation |
| Foliar spray | 20:1 (1L urine : 20L water) | Quick N + repellent effect |
| Seed treatment | 1:5, soak 6 hours | Pre-germination conditioning |
NPK
- Nitrogen: 0.1โ0.5% (low but plant-available)
- Phosphorus: trace
- Potassium: trace
Not a high-NPK input โ its value is the combination of quick N + pest repellent + microbial effect.
Uses
As a natural pesticide: The urea concentration at 10:1 dilution creates an osmotic + ammonia stress that repels soft-bodied insects (aphids, mites, leafhoppers). Many farmers spray around crop perimeter as a deterrent.
As a microbial activator: Urine contains lactic acid bacteria and enzymes that stimulate soil microbial activity โ works similarly to a mild Jeevamrutham drench.
As a component in: Jeevamrutham, Beejamrutham, Agniastra, Neemastra, Panchagavya โ cow urine appears in virtually every major ZBNF preparation.
Shelf Life
- Fresh: Use within 24 hours or ferment
- Fermented (basic): 1โ2 months
- Amritpani: 2โ3 months in sealed container
Desi Cow โ Does It Matter Here?
Yes โ same logic as dung. Desi Indian breeds (Gir, Sahiwal, Ongole, Kankrej) are claimed to produce urine with higher enzyme and hormone concentrations. Subhash Palekar specifies desi breeds only for ZBNF efficacy. Crossbreed urine is not useless, but desi is preferred.
